  • Silent Truths: Japanese Internment, Generational Citizenship, and American Silence A lecture in conjunction with Suzanne Onodera’s exhibition After the War

    Friday, July 30th
    Talk begins at 6:30 – 7:30 pm
    Community Arts Partnership’s Artspace Gallery
    110 N. Tioga, Ithaca, NY
Visitors who are vaccinated have the option not to wear masks
    Space will be limited
    Free and open to all

In conjunction with Suzanne Onodera’s exhibit After the War currently on display at Community Arts Partnership Artspace Gallery through July 31, 2021, Onodera will lecture on her process, the intimate familial stories behind her paintings, and the implications her work and her family's experience has for the honest – and urgent - documentation of American history.

    About the exhibit:

The images in the exhibit document scenes from Japanese-American Internment Camps throughout the USA, the growth of Los Angeles from a farmland to an urban center, and the juxtaposition of a family in leisurely Hawaii while its members were simultaneously interned and serving in WWII. Her work allows gentle appreciation for small things against the barely-discernible backdrop of war and dehumanization.

What is pictured is serene; what is not pictured is fiercely contextual.

Onodera captures intimate moments in American history that occurred but were never documented. An unexpected discussion with her family led to her researching national archives, and combining the two, Onodera imagined and represented scenes from her Japanese American family's past in beautiful, monochromatic paintings.

The exhibition After the War and supporting lecture are made possible by grants from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

The Community Arts Partnership's Artspace Gallery is located at 110 N. Tioga, on the north arm of the Commons, also home of The History Center in Tompkins County and the Downtown Visitor Center.

  • Working, Still Working

    I am here.
    Staying in Place.

These are crazy times, indeed, but artists are built for isolation and social distancing so I am weathering the storm in the best way I can under the circumstances. I am still getting in to the studio and trying to focus, but certainly the state of current events can make the days feel just so damn odd.

I have had some events cancelled that may be rescheduled in the upcoming year, and I have been working on a new group of paintings some of which are in the portfolio portion of this website. I also hope to have *good news* soon, but for right now, it's just work and...more work.

I count my blessings everyday and I am grateful for all of the support over these many decades!

Stay healthy. We will get through this together.

    -Suzanne
