Uncle Jimmy Jingu was a student at University of Texas in Austin in December 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked and war was officially declared between the United States and Japan.

Jimmy left his studies and returned home to enlist in the United States Army.

He was sent to Louisiana for basic training in the 442nd Infrantry and later shipped to Italy and France where he served as a radio operator. He received a Purple Heart before returning home to Texas where he resumed his education, receiving a degree in South American Economics.
