Grandma May and Grandpa Minoru would often describe Los Angeles before the war as "fragrant", the summer air thick with the scent of orange blossoms and honeysuckle.

My mother, who was about 12 when our family traveled back to Los Angeles after the war, remembered a Los Angeles as dark skies filled with stars and red, ripe tomatoes growing wild near the road.
